INTRODUCTION
     
 
Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology is that branch of Dentistry that integrates the fields of medicine and dentistry to promote optimal health. It was recognized as a specialty by the DCI in 1968(Oral medicine) and 1971(Oral Radiology) and since then has made tremendous progress in proving its worth in the fields of Dentistry and Medicine alike.

As a specialty, Oral Medicine & Radiology is mainly concerned with

 
 
Application of General Medicine & Diagnostics in dentistry for the management of various diseases of head & neck.
Oral health care of medically compromised patients.
The dental management of medically compromised patients
The diagnosis and management of a wide variety of non-surgical conditions of the intraoral hard and soft tissues, to include facial pain, salivary gland disorders, vesiculobullous diseases, and other oral soft tissue lesions that may be either primary in origin or oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
Recognition of the interaction of oral & systemic health
Integration of medical & oral health care
Management of Pharmaco-therapeutics necessary for treatment of oral & systemic diseases
Investigation of the etiology & treatment of oral diseases through basic science & clinical research
Research, teaching & patient care
Provision of care for medically complex patients & for those undergoing cancer therapy
Diagnosis and management of Psychosomatic oral diseases.
 
   
  AIMS & OBJECTIVES  
     
 
The Theme of the Dept is “Oral Health for General Health’. It goes about achieving this with the Motto Primum Non Nocere- Simply translated it means’ At first do no harm’.

The department aims to instil the following objectives in every student
 
     
 
To foster excellence in education, research, and patient care in the field of oral medicine.
To promote the study and dissemination of knowledge regarding the medical aspects of dentistry while serving the best interests of the public.
To promote the highest standards of care in the diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions that are not responsive to conventional dental, oral or maxillofacial surgical procedures.
To provide an avenue of referral for dental practitioners who have patients with severe, life-threatening medical disorders or complex diagnostic problems involving the oral and maxillofacial region that requires ongoing non-surgical management.
To improve the quality of life of patients with medically-related oral diseases

Scientific Paper titled ‘An Aggressive Inverted Papilloma Of The Maxillary Sinus’presented by Dr.Giridhar Naidu was adjudged to be one of five Best papers presented.

National Post Graduate Seminar, Chennai, 2003 was adjudged to be one of five Best papers presented.

 Scientific paper titled – ‘Extranodal lymphoma in the maxilla’ - a case report and review by Dr.V. Naveen Shankar was awarded Second prize

XVI th National IAOMR Conference, ‘GRIP’ on 14, 15, 16 2005 at GDC, Goa.

Scientific Paper titled ‘A Diffuse Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma’  by Dr.Vidya Ajila  - was awarded the Second Prize.

Prof Dr.Gopakumar R was elected the President IDA, Dakshina Kannada Branch for the year 2005.

Prof Dr. Gopakumar R took over as the Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine & Radiology for the period 2006-2008

Conducted Nitte – FOM, National Workshop on Forensic Odontology and Medicine, 18th, 19th and 20th, June 2004.
