INTRODUCTION
     
 

The motto of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is to dispense quality health care in the specialty of Orthodontics in an ethical manner and with Interdisciplinary Team Approach – a hospital based specialized care for Rural / Semi urban population.

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is one of the finest departments of the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. The department boasts of the best in terms of infrastructure , equipments, materials, out-patient and faculty.

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is located on the 5th floor of the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, with a built up area of around 9568 Sq. Ft.

 
   
  AIMS & OBJECTIVES  
     
 
To lay foundation of basic knowledge and assimilate associated orthodontic skills to enable students to Diagnose and Treat competently various Orthodontic problems.
To have a systematic understanding of the dynamic interaction of Biologic processes and Mechanical forces acting on the Stomatognathic system during Orthodontic treatment.
To have a thorough understanding of the Etiology, Patho-physiology and subsequently accurate Diagnosis and Treatment planning of various Orthodontic problems.
To have an understanding of the interactions of Social, Cultural, Economic, Genetic and Environmental factors and their relevance in the management of Orofacial Deformities.
To give adequate priorities to Infection Control and safe disposal of hospital waste so as to prevent cross infections.

  AREAS OF STUDY  
  Under Graduate Training Programme  
 
An undergraduate student is initially introduced to the basics of Orthodontics by means of lectures, seminars, and discussions from the 3rd year onwards. A final year student gets well acquainted with the Diagnosis and Treatment Planning which is the prime requisite to prepare them towards their success in clinical practice.

The Curriculum followed in the department at the undergraduate is as follows : Revised ordinance governing Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree course (2002) Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka Bangalore to under graduate level.

 
     
  Some of the highlights of the under graduate training programme are:  
 
A Faculty is allotted for theory and practical classes.
Multimedia Presentations are used extensively for theory classes. This helps in better understanding of the concepts and at the same time makes learning an enjoyable experience.
There is a One to one interaction and discussions with the students during Practical classes and clinical postings.
Practical demonstrations are given for various techniques and procedures like wire bending, acrylisation, finishing, etc.
The department library has most of the latest Orthodontic books, Journals & Periodicals for ready reference.
At periodic intervals there is Personal Counseling of students by senior staff members.
Proper Feedback is regularly obtained from students regarding any improvements in the department or various teaching modalities.
 
     
  Post Graduate Training Programme  
 

The orthodontic department has almost become a synonym for high achievement with state of the art equipment and advanced techniques of teaching. Every year, batches of P.G. students leave its portals as assured confident orthodontists. Our post graduates are competent enough to fabricate and manage the most appropriate appliance, intra or extra oral, removable, fixed or myofunctional appliances for the treatment of any orthodontic problems they may subsequently face in their day to day practice.

The Curriculum followed in the department at the postgraduate level is as follows : Revised ordinance governing Master of Dental Surgery (MDS.) degree course. Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, Bangalore. Since 1989, there is a Post Graduate Training Programme which was initially affiliated to the Mangalore University till 1995. After 1995 it has been affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka with an annual intake of 9 postgraduates currently.

 
     
  Some of the highlights of the Post Graduate Training Programme are:  
 
The Post Graduates are exposed to a vast number of clinical cases with various types of Dentofacial disorders.
The training modules comprise of very basic to most advanced Orthodontic Techniques and Mechanics.
There is a lot of emphasis on maintenance of up to date records for each case.
Post graduates have to maintain a Department Logbook of the work done, apart from the University Logbook.
A comprehensive Library Dissertation (L.D.) has to be completed along with the thesis.
The department has regular Multi-media Seminar Presentations, Journal Clubs and Case discussions.
Post Graduate Students actively participate in Rural Health Oriented Projects.
Our department has adopted Rural/ Satellite Centers where Orthodontic Treatment is given to patients who otherwise would have been denied orthodontic attention.

The department delivers comprehensive Orthodontic Management of Cleft Lip and Palate cases as well as other Craniofacial Disorders through team approach. The SMILE TRAIN Foundation, USA funds the charitable Cleft Lip and Palate program of the college, which treats more than 1000 cleft cases in a year in association with the Department of Orthodontics.
The department is associated with the Super Specialty Craniofacial Centre at KSHEMA.
The department is also associated with the Zurich University.

Comparative evaluation of Rapid Canine retraction with and without Inter septal corticotomy. Presented by Dr. Apurva Chitalia.
Won 1st place for clinical paper presented at the 39 Orthodontic Conference held at Davangere Oct 2004.
Won 2nd place for clinical paper presented at the national conference at Coimbatore Sep/Oct 2003.

Dr. Vineet Kumar was awarded 1st prize for his scientific poster presentation Entitled “GOLDEN EYE” which was guided By Dr. U.S. Krishna Nayak at the 37th annual Indian Orthodontic Society Conference held At Lucknow 2002.

Won 3rd place for the poster paper presented at the 39 Orthodontic Conference held at Davangere Oct 2004.
