INTRODUCTION
     
 
The Department of Prosthodontics deals with the replacement of missing oral and para-oral structures to restore the lost functions, aesthetics and patient comfort. A vast variety of treatment is undertaken here which encompasses single crowns, multiple unit Fixed Partial Denture Prostheses, Removable Partial Denture Prostheses, Complete denture prostheses, Maxillofacial rehabilitations, Temporomandibular disorder management and Implantology.

The Department of Prosthodontics is one of the only departments, which is involved in teaching all the 5 years of undergraduate students. The Postgraduate course entails detailed theoretical, laboratory and clinical applications of the art and science of prosthodontics and craniofacial prosthetics. A course on implantology has also been incorporated in which the students are trained not only in the prosthodontic aspects but also are exposed to the surgical aspects of the science.

To ensure adequate study and research facilities in the way of journal subscriptions, textbooks, CDE programmes, workshops, etc., to acquire in- depth knowledge of the profession

  AREAS OF STUDY  
  Undergraduate Programme  
 

The admissions for the undergraduate course (BDS) is conducted as per the rules set by the Dental Council of India, Government of Karnataka and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, which admits 100 students based on three categories; 35% through the CET examinations, 45% through the COMEDK examinations and 20% through the NRI / Institutional preference quota. Students hailing from privileged communities like SC, ST, OBG, etc. are allotted a quota under the CET and COMEDK sectors of the admission process. The Institutional preference quota permits for the admission of wards of government service personnel and teaching staff of the institution and also to those who have provided services to the institution for an extended period of time.
 
 
 
  Preclinical – 450 hours
  I BDS – Science of Dental Materials (Manipulation and handling of various dental materials)
  II BDS – Laboratory procedures for Complete denture Prosthesis and Laboratory exercises for FPD and RPD
  III BDS - Laboratory exercises for FPD and RPD
  IV BDS – Mannequin exercises for FPD and RPD
 
     
 
  Clinical – 540 + 360 hours
  III BDS – Complete denture cases (introduction and guidance)
  IV BDS – Removable Prosthodontics, RPD cases and FPD (introduction and guidance)
  Internship – In-house and rural centre comprehensive treatment for Prosthodontic rehabilitation
 
 

The Dental Materials Laboratory, an annexure to the department, trains I BDS students in handling and manipulation of basic dental materials and procedures. For the II BDS students a Preclinical Prosthodontic Section has been established to train them in laboratory procedures for the fabrication of complete denture prosthesis. Laboratory exercises for fabrication of RPD and FPD prosthesis is also delivered to the students. The III and IV year BDS students are allotted clinical postings wherein they are trained in the art of removable prosthodontics. The IV year BDS students are also trained in the art of fixed partial denture prosthesis, by demonstration and participation on a pre-clinical level. Theory classes are conducted using audio visual aids and power-point presentations. The internship programme includes in-house and rural centre comprehensive treatment for Prosthodontic rehabilitation.  Extended working hours are provided to the students so as to facilitate the completion of laboratory aspects of the stipulated treatment without wasting their clinical hours.

 
     
  Postgraduate Programme  
 
The department has a yearly enrollment of 10 doctors for the postgraduate course (MDS) of 3 years. The students hail from different parts of the Indian subcontinent as well as abroad (NRI) and are enrolled under the same three categories as the BDS students as per the university stipulations pertaining to that particular year of admission.

The department provides for a PhD programme in Prosthodontics including Crown and Bridge, Implantology and Aesthetic Dentistry and Science of Dental Materials.
